- What inspired you to focus on empowering youth in cybersecurity?
For me, it’s all about the power of knowledge and its impact on the next generation. Cybersecurity is such a critical area that touches every part of our lives, yet so many young people aren’t aware of the threats or how to protect themselves. I’ve seen first hand how Roequipping youth with basic cybersecurity skills can ignite their confidence and curiosity and even spark interest in future careers. I’m passionate about helping them build that foundation early.
- Why do you think it’s important for young people to learn cybersecurity skills?
We live in a digital-first world, and the risks are constantly evolving. Youth today are more connected than ever before, but many lack the skills to protect themselves. Learning basic cybersecurity skills isn’t just about safety — though that’s vital — it’s about giving them the tools to navigate the digital landscape confidently. In Canada, especially with our diverse communities and many newcomers, young people often play a crucial role in educating their households about technology. By empowering youth, we’re also helping families understand how to stay safe online. It’s a positive ripple effect that strengthens the whole community.
- Can you tell us more about the Cyberstart program and how it helps youth develop cybersecurity skills?
Cyberstart is an exciting, hands-on program designed to engage youth through interactive challenges that teach core cybersecurity concepts in a fun and accessible way. What I love about Cyberstart is that it’s not just about theory; it’s about solving real-world problems in a game-like environment. It’s a fantastic way for young people to learn by doing, and the program is structured to be inclusive, so no prior knowledge is required. We want to encourage curiosity and make cybersecurity approachable.
- What role do you believe programs like Cyberstart play in shaping the future of cybersecurity?
Programs like Cyberstart are essential because they help address the talent gap in cybersecurity by inspiring the next generation. The demand for cybersecurity professionals is growing, but there’s a significant shortage of skilled workers. By introducing young people to cybersecurity early on, we’re not only helping to keep them safe online but also fostering interest in potential career paths. Cyberstart is a perfect way to plant those seeds for the future.
- What advice would you give to parents or educators looking to introduce youth to cybersecurity?
My biggest piece of advice is to start early and make it engaging. Cybersecurity doesn’t have to be intimidating, and programs like Cyberstart make it easy and fun for kids to get involved. Encourage curiosity, foster a mindset of problem-solving, and most importantly, make cybersecurity part of everyday conversations. The earlier youth can understand the importance of digital safety, the better equipped they’ll be for the challenges of the future.
