A new federal border security bill, Bill C-2, would require Canadian companies to create digital entry points so police and intelligence agencies can access online communications. Supporters argue it’s a necessary modernization of law enforcement powers, but cybersecurity experts warn it could open the door to new risks. Charles Finlay, Founding Executive Director of Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst, says Canada must carefully balance public safety with digital security. “Our adversaries are well-resourced, highly motivated, and overwhelmingly successful,” he warns, adding that government-mandated access points could quickly become prime targets for hackers.
