My passion for technology ignited in Grade 9 during my time as a flight corporal in Air Cadets. That’s when I first encountered cybersecurity, a field that immediately captivated me. Eager to dive deeper, I explored countless online resources and, at just 15 years old, earned my basic ISC² certification. This early spark set the course for my academic and professional pursuits.
Discovering CyberStart Canada and TryHackMe
Entering Grade 11, I discovered CyberStart Canada, a program that transformed my learning experience. The gamified challenges on platforms like TryHackMe hooked me instantly. Despite juggling demanding academic courses, where I occasionally struggled, I persevered, completing challenges whenever possible. My dedication paid off: I became the top performer in the 2024-2025 cohort.
Scholarships, Certifications, and New Opportunities
Thrilled by my progress, I was encouraged to apply for the SANS Scholarship for the GIAC Foundational Cybersecurity Technologies (GFACT) exam. I received the scholarship and successfully completed the GFACT certification at 17 years old, while still in Grade 11. Achieving this SANS certification as a high school student would not have been possible without CyberStart Canada’s guidance and support.
This cybersecurity training opened incredible doors. Thanks to my GFACT certification, I secured a research position at the University of Waterloo’s prestigious Cheriton School of Computer Science. I was also selected as one of only 200 participants in Waterloo’s QSYS quantum training program. These opportunities validated my hard work and deepened my commitment to the field.
Why CyberStart Canada Matters Now More Than Ever
Cybersecurity has never been more critical, with Canada’s cybercrime rates surging 32% year-over-year, every family needs protection. CyberStart Canada’s tuition-free program equips high school students with essential skills when university cybersecurity courses and certifications cost thousands. Cybersecurity knowledge endures whatever technologies evolve next, safeguarding families today and building a safer digital world for future generations. I’m thrilled to give back as an ambassador and strongly encourage students everywhere to join CyberStart Canada; it’s a game-changing opportunity.
Becoming a CyberStart Canada Ambassador
In recognition of my achievements, CyberStart Canada offered me an ambassador position, a tremendous honor that boosted my university applications. Offers started rolling in from universities across Ontario as early as February, and they continue to arrive. I know my CyberStart GFACT certification and ambassador role have carried significant weight in my admissions process.
CyberStart Canada has been a guiding light, sparking my lifelong interest in cybersecurity. I am determined to pursue a career in this dynamic field, building on the skills and confidence gained through the program.
